Elections in the Republic of Benin take place within the framework of a multi-party
democracy and a presidential system. Both the President and the National Assembly
are directly elected by voters, with elections organized by the Autonomous National
Electoral Commission (CENA). The presidential elections held on April 11, 2021
led to the victory of incumbent President Patrice Talon of the Independent Party.
Ahead of the election, the political atmosphere was characterized with protests,
distrust, suppression of the media and threats against political opponents.
